For over 10 years Rise Services has shared its knowledge of Energy Trading Systems with students attending the University of Houston. This unique course unifies a variety of majors within the Bauer College of Business such as accounting, finance, and management information systems, just to name a few. The Energy Trading Systems course gives students a hands-on perspective of the natural gas industry and the knowledge of the design and operation of Energy Trading and Risk Management systems that sustain natural gas trading. Rise has not only contributed by the creation of the core curriculum, but Rise has also donated the GasPro gas management licenses for use by all students that will take the course.

On a more in-depth level, this course was created in order to familiarize graduate and undergraduate students with energy business processes related to physical and financial commodity trading, scheduling, risk analysis, controls & compliance, and accounting. It illustrates the IT needs that these tools create and provides a look into the business of providing technology services to energy firms. Furthermore, the Energy Trading Systems course allots students with hands-on exposure to software tools used by major energy firms in the industry, along with facilitating key interaction between these talented students and the energy trading community.

Rise has created a teaching environment at the University of Houston wherein students can become a greater asset to their future employers from day one.  It is critical that students grasp the fundamental elements that make up our natural gas industry, and this is why Rise focuses on teaching students the foundation of the natural gas energy in preparation for instruction on energy trading data sources, how energy market data is analyzed, how trading strategies are formulated and how trade transactions are processed. Once students see the gas business from this perspective then everything else falls into place, including the role of technology and gas management systems.

In the near future, Rise plans to expand its horizons by offering this course on LearnWorlds, an easy-to-use online learning platform through the ASCEND program. ASCEND will provide students from all over the world the opportunity to obtain the knowledge and skill sets that are in high demand within the natural gas industry. By teaching and familiarizing students with the terminology, key players, mechanisms and processes essential to this industry, ASCEND will be the catalyst to get students from where they are now to where they would like to be in this ever evolving and dynamic industry.
